What is Biome?

Basically, the Biome is defined as a large regional community primarily determined by its climate, vegetation, and soil texture. Typically it is the largest unit that is used by scientists to describe geographic regions that share some same characteristics. These are soil type, flora, and fauna. The definition is considered in each of the regions where individual communities are formed by the biotic and abiotic components. It is also considered that the biome exists in every region of the world.

How do we Classify the Biome?

The biomes are basically classified on the basis of biotic and Abiotic factors. Here are some abiotic components of the environment like temperature and precipitations. There are also other elements of the environment that are also playing an important role like sunlight and soil types. The location also plays a crucial role to determine the abiotic factors in the environment. For example, all tropical rainforest biomes are located near the equator. These factors experience cold temperatures very least because they receive very high amounts of rain and sunlight all over the year.

The other factor of the biome is a biotic factor which includes species of flora, fauna, and microorganisms. Different species have experienced similar adaptations to survive in specific biome. Some biome is also named after the vegetation found in this region. For example, the grassland derives its name due to a large number of grasses grown on it.

The debate among scientists is how they will describe the biome. Some considered that there are 20 types of biome but some agreed that there are only 5 types of biome.

Importance of Biome

Now it is difficult to see the importance of plants due to industrialization and urbanization in this world. Most of the people say that these plants have no importance on this planet. The importance here we can understand that without the plant’s survival of animals and human is also impossible on this planet. That’s the fact here these carnivores could not survive without plants. As the herbivores could not survive without the primary producers also carnivores die due to lake of herbivores

Factors for Determination of Biome

Two important factors that determine the flora and fauna that live in each biome are temperature and rainfall. Depending on the temperature ranges and annual rainfall levels present in a biome, the number of species that can live there varies.

Species competition should also be mentioned as a determinant of biomes. Many species of animals and plants cannot live in certain biomes because other species prevent them from doing so. They often compete for food and sometimes fight over territory.

As mentioned above, the climate is the most important factor for the survival of species. So no such biome has been found in deserts and tropical forests. The climate has complete control over what lives and grows in each biome, and this can also change due to the rotation of the Earth, so some regions have rainy seasons and others are hot, it’s very dry.

Types of Biomes

There are several types of biomes on the earth. Each biome has its own unique and exclusive characteristics that differentiate them from other planets. The difference in these planets is created by the sort of plants and animal species. There are different explanations for the many species due to their livings and food standards.

More about a biome, we can understand the interactions between different organisms for their food and shelter. Earlier they try to create some balance among them. This balance between them is very crucial because it is vital to maintain the equilibrium and balance between them in an ecosystem.

Terrestrial Biome

They do not have oceans or lakes found on the earth. They normally have an abundance of vegetation due to climatic variation depending on their altitude and latitude. The best examples include forests, tundra, grassland, and deserts.

Tundra Biome

This biome is characterized by very harsh conditions and very low temperatures due to that survival is so much more difficult. Only a few species of plants and animals can survive there. It is spread in the Arctic and Russia. Human beings face many difficulties to survive there.

Basques Biome

This Biome is found in tropical and subtropical areas. In this biome, the moisture is so much good due to rainfall and most importantly there is great vegetation. This biome is characterized by high moisture content.

Meadows Biome

This biome has very beautiful flowers and also has varieties of plants. This biome has both drier and also rainy seasons so life here is stable. Due to stable conditions of living other many species can also survive there. The temperature remains stable throughout the year.

Desert Biome

The desert biome is opposite to the Tundra biome. This is so much hotter biome. There is a very high risk of fire in forests due to very high temperatures. This biome is characterized by extreme temperature, climatic conditions, and little abundant precipitations. In this biome, the humidity is very least. The organisms which are living in this biome have the ability to survive in harsh conditions and also to bear water scarcity.

Freshwater biomes

This is the freshwater biome and it is very easy for organisms to survive there. Aquatic life is abundant and totally different from terrestrial life. These biomes are characterized by the organisms living in freshwater. The living organism’s life depends on many variables like temperature, water depth, water regime, etc.

Marine biomes

Marine water has a high concentration of salt. This characteristic differentiates it by Freshwater biome. Among these, we can find seas, estuaries, oceans, and also coral reefs. Coral reefs are also affected by climatic changes. When the temperature of the ocean rises then the leaching of the coral reefs also happens due to the greenhouse effect and global warming as a result there happens a disease called “Bleaching”

Endothelia Biome

Neolithic Biome has an entirely different classification which is in the opinion of the experts. However, many scientists argue to deserve the proper categorization that we have to give them. This biome includes the microscopic forms of life and moreover, this biome is found in all other biomes. All life forms also exist in this biome.

Humanity, Climate Change, and Biomes

There is no doubt that human has disturbed and affected badly to the environment. So, when we mention humans, we also mention climate change here. There is a quick increase in global warming due to human activities. There are many fluctuations in temperature sometimes temperature increases and sometimes decreases also the survival of organisms depends on it.

In some communities, the succession reached a peak like a climax, which has a small and stable dominant amount of species. The equilibrium is maintained here, this stage of equilibrium is known as the climax community. In other small places, there is a diverse mix of species and these also become dominant with the passage of time.
