What is FSH?

Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is a hormone involved in the growth and development of the body, regulating puberty and various reproductive processes. FSH is a polypeptide hormone. It is generally considered gonadotropin.  Gonadotropins secrete FSH into the posterior pituitary gland. FSH affects both men and women. It mainly involves the maturation of male and female germ cells. In women, FSH has different functions.

The amount of FSH in the blood is significantly different from the concentration of follicle-stimulating hormone in men and women. A person’s age also affects his amount. Note that in women the amount of this hormone will change with the menstrual cycle.

The amount of FSH alone can be important. But along with the test results of sex hormones (testosterone in men and progesterone and estrogen in women), that can really be interpreted. The FSH test is done on the blood. It is better not to do this test on women during menstruation. If you have taken birth control pills, your test results will not be accurate. It is best to inform your lab and doctor before sampling.

What is LH?

Luteinizing hormone (LH) is produced by gonadotropin cells in the anterior pituitary gland. LH is secreted by the pituitary gland and is regulated by gonadotropin-releasing hormone. LH is a heterogeneous glycoprotein. Each monomer unit consists of a glycoprotein molecule containing alpha and beta, which form a fully functional protein.

In women, theca cells in the uterus help LH. An increase in LH causes corpus luteum production and ovulation begins. In men, LH is called an interstitial cell-stimulating hormone (ICSH). This lactic acid stimulates the production of testosterone by the cells.
