Types Of Output Devices And Their Functions

For data processing to make sense, we must be capable to get the results from the computer. The devices on which the processing results are recorded are called output devices. The monitor and printer are the main types of output devices.

What Is Output?

Out is the result of the processing by the computer. It can be in the form of text, images, or graphics.

What Is An Output Device?

Output devices Definition: Output devices are devices to which a computer sends information in a form we can understand.  It can be any hardware equipment that takes data from your computer and converts it to another form.

It can also be in the form of a speaker that amplifies the sound, a screen that displays images, or a printer that displays content on pages in the form of hard copy. Common examples of Output devices are monitors, printers, headphones, and speakers.

Types Of Output Devices

Major Types of Output Devices are:

  • Output Display Devices
  • Audio Output Devices
  • Physical Output Devices

Output Display Devices: Monitors are the most general type of output display devices and include accessories such as monitors and screens. TVs and projectors are standard display output devices, but this consists of a device that allows you to see what is happening on your computer, in the form of text, graphics, or video.

Audio Output Devices: Audio output device, as the name shows, refers to devices that play both internal and external speakers, which may be ported via a 3.5mm headphone jack. Lightning or even wireless via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. The audio output device not only produces clear sounds but also sounds such as music or a soundtrack.

Physical Output Devices: Physical output devices make something solid, and in general, you guessed it, the printer is the best example in this category. These can be ordinary 2D printers that reproduce words on a piece of paper. They can also create 3D print outputs, creating complete objects.

Functions of Output Devices

Output devices are used to get responses from the computer in the form of a hard copy (printer), a video (monitor), sound (speakers), or media devices (CD or DVD drives). The function of these output devices is to translate the machine’s response into a form clearly understandable by the computer user.

Examples of Output Devices

10 common examples of output devices are:

  • Monitor
  • Printer
  • Audio Speakers
  • Headphones
  • Projector
  • GPS
  • Sound Card
  • Video Card
  • Braille Reader
  • Plotter

  • Monitor

A monitor is the most common output device used to display information and comes in many forms. The monitor is not just a connection of wires and cables to the monitor, but also a versatile device that allows you to visualize any image, regardless of its characteristics.

Such a device is required for the input and output of information. Displays vary depending on the diagonal, the design of the device, and so on. Therefore, the consumer receives a wide range of quality, reliable, and proven equipment for home and office use.

  • Printer

A printer is a computer peripheral that converts electronic data, which can be text or images, from a computer or any other device such as a phone, tablet, or flash drive into a hard copy. It is the most commonly used computer peripheral output device.

It is commonly used for printing text and photos. But since 2010, a new generation of printers called 3D printers has entered the market, which has the ability to make physical objects using their raw materials.

  • Audio Speakers

Speakers are devices that transform electrical signals amplified by amplifiers into air vibrations that can be heard by humans in the form of sound.

Speakers are available in different shapes, sizes, types, and models. Regardless of their design, the function of the speakers is to produce audio output that can be heard by humans or listeners.

  • Headphones

headphones are used only for listening to music and because they do not have a microphone, they can not talk. Connection of headphones to the audio source can be done with wires or wirelessly (Bluetooth). The headphones are placed on both ears and are called on-ear.

Headphones contain two speakers that are connected. Having a speaker for the right ear and a speaker for the left ear allows people to have a good experience in stereo sound when using headphones. The connection of headphones is usually done in the form of 3.5 and 2.5 mm jacks, a USB port, or Bluetooth.

  • Projector

A video projector is a device used to display digital images sent from computers and laptops in very large dimensions and with very high quality on a white screen or wall.

It receives video images and information from a computer, video, DVD player, camcorder, digital camera, TV, etc., and displays the output via a small light source by magnifying them on a wall are screen.

  • GPS

GPS stands for Global Positioning System, which allows anyone to access location information anywhere in the world. It is the most efficient radio navigation system.

This technology uses radio waves to communicate between satellites and your phone, giving you information such as time and location.

  • Sound Card

Sound Card is a hardware component that records, edits, and plays a wide range of sounds. One of the main tasks of this piece of hardware is to prepare the signals for playback through speakers or monitoring speakers, as well as to receive input signals from the microphone. Another feature of using a sound card is the minimal delay in sound production, which minimizes this issue.

  • Video Graphic Card

A graphics card is a piece of hardware that produces the images you see on a monitor. The graphics card is responsible for producing (rendering) the image for the monitor, and it does this by converting the data into a signal that the monitor can understand.

The image that can be displayed on a monitor means that the images are understandable to humans. The better the graphics card, the better the images will be. This is very important for gamers and those who edit videos.

  • Braille Reader

A Braille reader, also known as a Braille display, is an electronic device that enables a blind person to read the text shown on a computer monitor.

The computer sends the text to the output device, where it is converted to Braille and “displayed” by raising the round pins from a flat surface.

Braille readers are available in a variety of forms, including large units (about the size of a computer keyboard) and smaller units developed to work with laptops and tablets.

There are also Braille readers for smartphones and tablets that work with the Bluetooth output device. The image below is the Orbit Reader 20, an example of a Braille reader.

  • Plotter

the plotter is a type of printing machine used to print graphic images. The plotter can print any type of photo at large width. Plotters are divided into two groups. The plotters that use specially coated paper are called electrostatic, and plotters that use plain paper.

Plotters, like other digital printing machines, have heads through which colors are transferred and ink is transferred from special containers to paper by the heads.
