Difference Between FSH And LH

In men, the testicles and in women the ovaries are responsible for making sex hormones. The brain uses the two hormones FSH and LH to control the level of sex hormones in our body.

Simultaneous monitoring of sex hormones and LH and FSH levels will eventually allow the treatment team to get an accurate picture of the individual’s hormonal status. As a result, find out what is the reason for the possible lack of high levels of sex hormones in a person’s bloodstream.

What is FSH?

Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is a hormone involved in the growth and development of the body, regulating puberty and various reproductive processes. FSH is a polypeptide hormone. It is generally considered gonadotropin.  Gonadotropins secrete FSH into the posterior pituitary gland. FSH affects both men and women. It mainly involves the maturation of male and female germ cells. In women, FSH has different functions.

The amount of FSH in the blood is significantly different from the concentration of follicle-stimulating hormone in men and women. A person’s age also affects his amount. Note that in women the amount of this hormone will change with the menstrual cycle.

The amount of FSH alone can be important. But along with the test results of sex hormones (testosterone in men and progesterone and estrogen in women), that can really be interpreted. The FSH test is done on the blood. It is better not to do this test on women during menstruation. If you have taken birth control pills, your test results will not be accurate. It is best to inform your lab and doctor before sampling.

What is LH?

Luteinizing hormone (LH) is produced by gonadotropin cells in the anterior pituitary gland. LH is secreted by the pituitary gland and is regulated by gonadotropin-releasing hormone. LH is a heterogeneous glycoprotein. Each monomer unit consists of a glycoprotein molecule containing alpha and beta, which form a fully functional protein.

In women, theca cells in the uterus help LH. An increase in LH causes corpus luteum production and ovulation begins. In men, LH is called an interstitial cell-stimulating hormone (ICSH). This lactic acid stimulates the production of testosterone by the cells.

Difference Between FSH And LH

Here is the list of common differences between LH and FSH.

FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone)

  • FSH controls the development of primary sex organs.
  • It stimulates gamete formation in primary sex organs.
  • Follicle Stimulating Hormone stimulates the secretion of estrogen by growing Graafian follicle.
  • It controls the first half of the ovarian or menstrual cycle.
  • The hormone does not have any major role in ovulation.
  • It does not help in the synthesis of androgens.
  • FSH does not act on the corpus luteum.

LH (Luteinsing Hormone)

  • LH has no role in the development of primary sex organs.
  • It has no effect on the formation of gametes.
  • It does not do so.
  • Luteinising Hormone controls the second half of the menstrual cycle.
  • The hormone is required for ovulation.
  • LH acts on Leydig cells and helps produce androgens.
  • It sustains the development of the corpus luteum and its secretory activity.
